FIP effect measurements in the off-limb corona observed by SUMER on SOHO

چکیده
Systematic differences between elemental abundances in the corona and in the photosphere have been long acknowledged in the Sun; these abundance anomalies are correlated with the first ionization potentials (FIPs) of the elements. This correlation is called FIP effect. Using spectra obtained from the SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) spectrograph on the spacecraft SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory), we investigate electron density, temperature and the abundance anomalies in the off-limb solar corona. In particular, we present the behaviour of the solar FIP effect with height above an active region observed at the solar limb, with K/Ar, Si/Ar and S/Ar ratios of lines present in the recorded UV spectra. We find that the K FIP bias seems to be higher than for the other low-FIP elements, and that the Si and K FIP biases are dependent on the distance from the photosphere. Studying the Ne/Mg line ratio in the active region, we also investigate the presence of the FIP effect in active region structures.

Composition Variations in the Solar Corona and Solar Wind
Order of magnitude variations in relative elemental abundances are observed in the solar corona and solar wind. The instruments aboard SOHO make it possible to explore these variations in detail to determine whether they arise near the solar surface or higher in the corona. A substantial enhancement of low First Ionization Potential (FIP) elements relative to high FIP elements is often seen in ...
متن کاملSolar off - limb line widths : Alfvén waves , ion - cyclotron waves , and preferential heating
Context. Alfvén waves and ion-cyclotron absorption of high-frequency waves are frequently brought into models devoted to coronal heating and fast solar-wind acceleration. Signatures of ion-cyclotron resonance have already been observed in situ in the solar wind (HELIOS spacecrafts) and, recently, in the upper corona (UVCS/SOHO remote-sensing results). Aims. We propose a method to constrain both...
متن کاملVery long period activity at the base of solar wind streams
Using time series data of spectral lines originating from a wide range of temperatures in the solar transition region, above a polar coronal hole, from SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) on SoHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory), we report on the detection of very long (≈170 min) periodic intensity fluctuations, above the limb. Our data also reveal long periodicities...
متن کاملLarge-scale Coronal Density and Abundance Structures and Their Association with Magnetic Field Structure
We construct subsynoptic maps of the ultraviolet-line fluxes, electron density, and elemental abundances for an east limb corona at 1.63 solar radii from 2000 September 20 to October 1. The data, covering position angles of 85 Y126 , were taken from the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and the maps are based on the variation of ...
متن کاملProton and hydrogen temperatures at the base of the solar polar corona
The SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) Spectrometer on SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) has been used to observe the lines of the Lyman series (up to quantum numbers larger than 20) of hydrogen emitted in the solar atmosphere. The line shapes and intensities versus height are obtained near the limb from about -10′′ to 70′′. The lines are broad and show the typi...
